Gli pneumatici invernali hanno una mescola morbida e un battistrada con tante lamelle, che restano aderenti sotto i 7 °C, sulla neve e sul fondo bagnato e freddo.
In Italia, sulle strade dove c'è l'ordinanza, dal 15 novembre al 15 aprile servono pneumatici invernali o catene a bordo. Il simbolo 3PMSF (la montagna con il fiocco di neve) indica gli pneumatici collaudati sulla neve.
